Why is it that every nail salon I've ever been in is playing KOST 103.5 fm (or regional soft rock equivalent)? When a manicurist license is issued, is it required that they tune their radios to KOST?

Coverville is playing covers of video game songs. They started with Super Mario Bros. which took me waaay back. The Brian announced that Zelda is celebrating its 20th anniversary and I'm feeling waaaay old. Still, this music is painting happy, nostalgic images in my head.

I went to the premiere of Coachella (the movie) last night. Kelly worked on the film over the last six years and it was fun to see the completed project. Lots of GREAT performances. The film introduced me to Fischerspooner. I fell in love with their performance and am listening to their first album now. Makes me want to crazy dance!

While cleaning the kitchen this morning, I had the iPod on...catching up on Coverville episodes.
Coverville episode 145; 35 minutes in; Brian starts playing my called-in request!!!!
So my voice is coming out of my iPod and I'm freaking out. Like hyper 13-year-old squealing.

We've been in Dublin for a couple days now. Today is my first work day and I'm a little sad as I'd like to keep having fun. But I guess since the job is paying for the trip, I'd better stop my moaning.
I like Dublin. The weather is cold and damp, but not TOO cold and damp. It's a nice change from SoCal. `on our first night we walked around Temple Bar which really reminded me of a colder, Irish version of the French Quarter in New Orleans. I think it was the old buildings coupled with the large amount of pubs and people.
We also went to the Guiness factory. "Guiness is Good for You," I learned in the advertisements. We also saw Trinity College, the Book of Kells, walked around Grafton Street and St. Stephans Green, and saw the Cathedrals (St. Patrick's and Christ Church) from the outside.
I wonder what Kelly's going to do with the rest of his free time this week.

Here's a little story called "Who's the a$$hole?"
Earlier this week our refrigerator died. It took us some time to convince the landlady that it was indeed not working. You see, the fridge is hers. In fact, when we moved in over two years ago, we wanted to bring my almost new refrigerator, but she said "No, I will not move the one in the unit." How ironic.
So, upon initial notification, landlady comes in to investigate. Kelly and I weren't home, but she left a note on the door telling us that the lightbulb was out and that we should just change it. Seems the contents were still cool when she looked into the problem. Seems she didn't notice that the motor wasn't running! A$$hole!
The follow-up note we left got results in the form of an ammendment to the lease stating that she is not responsible for the refridgerator. Along with a note saying: "I no longer provide refrigerator for units. You can buy yourself a refrigerator." Gee, thanks alot, A$$hole.
Ok, this is the part when people all weigh in on how to fight this. It can't be legal?! Blah, blah, blah. Well, our landlady is crazy. It's like arguing with a brick wall. So, we plan to suck it up and buy a new refrigerator. The plan is to go low-end-ish, like $500. And try to get it delivered Monday. I got to Best Buy and Sears, find a stylish looking appliance for $500, and arrange delivery.
Today, I finished throwing out all the spoiled food...probably $200 worth. Add that to the cost and inconvenience of the situation. As I finish kitchen clean-up, I try to run the dishwasher. Nothing. Sh!t, how can that be broken too?! Then I realize, what if it's just an electrical problem and the fridge didn't die after all. So I test outlets, flip some circuit breakers, and voila....the refrigerator starts up again. Thankfully, I was able to return and cancel delivery of the new appliance, but now I feel like the a$$hole.

I just saw Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. I loved it! I giggled my whole way through it. It was the perfect amount/type of weird. The kid who played Charlie was great (very important). I liked Depp's interpretation. And I adored the Oompa Loompas and music. I can't stop singing the theme song!

I start a new job on Monday and after seven months of unemployment, I felt I deserved a treat. So I splurged on a designer handbag. This is the most money I've EVER spent on a purse, but I'm worth it!

It's Cole Haan and the color is a much deeper blue in person.

I'm bummed out. I got an iPod mini for Christmas and haven't gotten to play with it yet. Day after xmas I ordered a firewire card for my computer and hoped for quick delivery. Got a UPS tracking number that said it would be delivered on 12/29. They actually attempted delivery on 12/28 but no one was home. All day today I waited anxiously for my firewire card, anticipating the fun of installing it getting my iPod going. Late in the day I checked the online tracking and it said it was already delivered. Details indicated that it had been left at the front door. I went out to check but there was nothing. I called UPS who said by tomorrow they'd be able to tell me who signed for it.
I'm pretty confident that the card will show up (perhaps it was mis-delivered to a neighbor) or that UPS will pay to replace the lost goods. But in the meantime I WANNA PLAY WITH MY NEW TOY!!! Waaaaaahhh!!!!!

I just watched a great old movie for the first time. Goodbye, Mr. Chips. I adored it! I even cried.
Another thought....1939 seemed to be an outstanding year in movies. This one, Gone With the Wind AND Wizard of Oz. I wonder if people in 1939 realized it was an extrordinary year.

I'm reading the Poisonwood Bible by Barbara Kingsolver. I'm quickly getting sucked into this world where four young girls are dragged into the 1950s Congo by their Baptist preacher father. So far my two favorite images are:
1. Preacher father explaining why college educations are wasted on women by comparing it to pouring water into a shoe -- Either the water runs right out or it collects in the shoe and ruins it.
2. Pretty daughter ponders "Diamonds Are a Girl's Best Friend" when she meets a man who worked in a diamond mine. I can't do this passage justice by paraphrasing so I'm just going to quote:
"But when I looked at Anatole's wrinkled brown knuckles and pinkish palms, I pictures hands like those digging diamonds out of the Congo dirt and got to thinking, Gee, does Marilyn Monroe even know where they come from? Just picturing her in her satin gown and a Congolese diamond digger in the same universe gave me the weebie jeebies. So I didn't think about it anymore."

I saw a delivery truck for Sarah Lee today with the tagline "Nobody Doesn't Like Sarah Lee." My first thought was that it's an awful tagline. It's confusing and negative. Shouldn't it be "Everybody Likes Sarah Lee." Then the jingle from their TV commercials popped into my head. And I realized that I'd always thought the line was "Nobody Does It Like Sarah Lee" -- which I think is a better motto. And which just reinforces how lame the tagline on the truck was.

This week, a project I started in March came to fruition on the PriceGrabber web site. We're offering a candidate comparison engine for the 2004 elections.
http://www.pricegrabber.com/election2004.php
We've got information on candidates for president, US senate and state governors. I'll be working with USC over the next couple weeks to add more data, but wanted to share it with you all now since I'm pretty proud of it.

So I'm slowly recovering from my total hard drive meltdown earlier this week. Got some good news today when my printer sent me a CD of files they had from me. Luckily, it has all the templates for our business cards. I'm psyched about that since re-creating that was going to be time intensive.

Bad day at work today. My hard drive died with no warning. I lost over 2 years of email and data. I thought there was a back-up procedure in place. I was wrong. There's a slim chance that our IT dept. could get the drive running again long enough to pull all the data off, but they're told me not to count on it. I spent the day setting up my new computer and asking colleagues if they have copies of any of my critical documents. All day I alternated between nausea and manic laughter. In my best moments, I was able to refer to the incident as the ultimate in spring cleaning. I felt like it was my first day on the job today with my oldest email dating 4 pm yesterday and a blank My Docs folder. I hope tomorrow is better. I don't think it could be worse.
